One, I feel like such an idiot for being so late to reading this but two, does Substack have a most likely to be morally sound category? Because if so I would put you on #1 BEST SELLER. The internet needs more of this, thank you for keeping it REAL.

I have been *very* tempted lately to throw my cellphone into oncoming traffic — unsubscribe from IT ALL — and I think this is definitely one of the reasons. I’m like a moth to the fashion light and every now and then I do think we all need a good slap to snap out of it.

Your writing is so thought provoking. I’ve found my eyes opened to some new brands and pieces and obviously trends since joining Substack. What I find is a lot doesn’t translate to my life in the Midwest and especially in a rural health clinic. But it’s fun to look and those few things that call to me and truly bring me joy are great! I hope you have a fabulous trip!

underwear overpacker right here and no regrets!! something about having endless access to clean panties really brings me calm haha. and !! all you need to bring is a good attitude. i love this. i couldn’t agree more.

this past week i was on my friend’s bachelorette and she didn’t want us to call it that bc of all of our negative connotations around the concept, but a good attitude was my singular goal.

and ya know what? i deeply enjoyed my time celebrating my girl 🥰

Love this! I'm also trying not to buy anything in July, so, I'll meet you there. I bring a portable sound machine with me when I travel. And if I forget it, I'm streaming white noise on spotify all night. I love the Catskills so much, jealous! Have fun!!

Loved this. And I too am an awful sleeper when not at home, it’s rather annoying. Earplugs are what get me through. I hope you have a wonderful time away!

So appreciate the mention of my piece 💕

Tricia Torley's avatar

Earplugs are such a good tip, I am going to pack mine!

I loved your piece, I bookmarked it to go back to and followed everyone you suggested. Thanks for putting it together!

Gahh, thanks friend!

Tricia I so appreciate your honesty and reflections. These are gentle reminders we (I) all need! 💙

Also I’m packing for Michigan this week so this post came at the perfect time!

I’ll check out the posts you mentioned 😄

Thank you, thank you for always chiming in. (And for the coffee <3)

This was a great read, Tricia! I find myself thinking about the same things — the perceived urgency of buying these items that are so expensive and trend driven. It’s hard not to get caught up in it (especially when the offerings are so damn cute). Hope you have a fabulous trip!

Also sometimes I'm like, no one in my real life is buying the things I'm inundated with online. So maybe it's time to touch grass before I convince myself I need to buy something? Thanks for reading <3

so true! I realize that whenever I wear my Amazon Jellies, which seem ubiquitous online but IRL people have never seen them before. Talk about a reality check, ha!

Also may have to join you for no buy July!

What I love about this platform is how real people are. Something I always disliked about the other platforms was the feeling of not belonging because I didn't buy that item. When I joined Substack I wanted it to be a different experience. This is a human experiment because even though we do want to buy that piece everyone is talking about, the reality is that one, I don't need it, two, I have other priorities than spending so much money on one piece, and three, I don't have that kind of money. So I think the best thing is to observe, be happy for the people that can enjoy it and move on. Also, because of Nicole's note and another one I saw, it made me realize how the algorithm is not so diverse, and I love that we are all talking about it and maybe becoming more conscious when writing posts or creating mood boards. Have fun with your friends, chat as much as you can, connect and put that phone away. 😘

Can't tell you how much it means that you always respond so thoughtfully. I appreciate how genuinely you show up on Substack, and how you build connections with others.

Have the best girls weekend! I too would know I’ve made it if I can casually press checkout on those pants with no hesitations 😂

Tricia Torley's avatar

Haha! I love that as a measure of success.

Thank you for the links—eager to read the discourse!

I too have been tempted by the taffeta pants. Then I remembered that no matter how fun the fabric (I love polka dots) I would never be caught dead in cargo pants, and I only wear shorts when doing something ACTIVE. I am tempted by the taffeta cigarette pants the brand offers, though, because those feel like the perfect cocktail party pants. We shall see!

I love the idea of cocktail party pants, and I can see the appeal there for sure! But I also love how specific you are in your decision making -- and I'm with you on the cargo pants. I can't go back to that part of my life (aka 6th grade).
